Set up Google Analytics integration using Google Tag Manager

Learn how to use Google Tag Manager to track Helppier widget events on Google Analytics.

1. On GTM panel, click "Add a New Tag" to create a GA tag for your Helppier tracking code. 

2. From the new window, click on Tag Configuration > Universal Analytics.

3. Enter your Google Analytics Tracking ID. Then, choose "Event" from the Track Type drop-down section.

4. Set the tracking parameters:

- On Category field, click the Macro button.

- Click + button to set up a Category event. 

- Select "Data Layer Variable" from the list as the “Variable Type”.

- Enter
exactly the name
 eventCategory in the "Data Layer Variable Name" field. 

- Click on the Save button. Add a variable name to the event, e.g. "Event Category"

5. Create new variables for all the fields Action, Label and Value, at the same way you created the variable Event Category. Enter on the "Data Layer Variable Name" exactly:
- eventAction for the variable Event Action
- eventLabel for the variable Event Label
- eventValue for the variable Event Value

Your completed GA tag should look like this:

6. Finally, you need to set up a firing rule to track Helppier events:

- Click on "Trigger Configuration" button 

- Select "Custom Event" option.

- In the "Event name" field, enter exactly helppierTrigger .

Click on the Save button. Add a trigger name to the event, e.g. "Helppier Trigger"
7. Save the new tag that was just created. To finalize, click on the 'Publish' button to add your tag.

After you publish the new version of GA tag, visitors who click on the Helppier widget or see a guide will automatically trigger and create a new Event in your Google Analytics account.



8. Last step is to activate the integration with GTM on Helppier dashboard.

Go to Integrations > New Integration and select "Google Tag Manager" option.

Advanced Settings: Set up Custom Dimensions


To be able to associate more data about Helppier Guides to Google Analytics, you can create more 5 custom dimension.
Below is the list of custom dimension tracked in Google Analytics.
"guideType" - Type of the guide created, Tutorial or Tooltip
"guideName" - The name of the Guide 
"stepIndex" - Index Number of the guide step
"stepName" - The name of the guide step
"specificMessage" - Feedback option choosen by the user on the guide step

How to create custom dimension using Google Tag Manager

"The first step is to create a Custom Dimension in Google Analytics. To do so, log in to your Google Analytics account, and under ‘Admin,’ search for the ‘Custom Definitions’ section under the property menu. From there, select ‘Custom Dimensions’ and click to add a new dimension." Learn more here to create Custom dimensions with Google Tag Manager.

The final step is to create the Custom Dimensions in your Universal Analytics tag related with Helppier events that we showed before.

Your completed custom dimension on GTM should look like this:

Note: Make sure that "the ‘Index’ input field refers to the Custom Dimension slot in Google Analytics (the same one we created in Google Analytics the first step), and the ‘Dimension Value’ input field refers to the variable you want to input".

How to Set Up User ID in Google Analytics

Now you can see on Google Analytics what a single user has done on Helppier widget with Google Tag Manager: About the User ID feature.
First step, you have to set up the User ID feature on Google Analtycis. See here how to implement this feature.
Secondly, on Google Tag Manager, go to your Universal Analytics tag with Helppier events (previous created). Open the More settings > Fields to Set option and then click Add Field. Enter the value userId for your new field.

Click Save and that’s it! Now you can track users who has an account on your site.
